Cheap Trick’s Rick Nielsen Gives Free Guitar Lesson on Instagram

A few weeks ago, Rick Nielsen of Cheap Trick took to Instagram to offered up a “free and easy guitar lesson whilst we languish in self-quarantine limbo.” He wrote, “For over forty years at least once a month other bands or musicians, some well known, most are not, (YET) will treat me with their version of how they’ve learned the song ‘Surrender’ which is flattering, but 9 times outta 10, it sounds kinda funny to me, so I usually either try to correct their rendition or I’ll suggest, you wanna know how I play ‘Surrender’? It’s simple but….thanks it’s great that you know it and you’ve learned it, maybe not wrong but let’s try my simpler way of playing. So here we go.” We’ll be hearing from Rick on the show Friday, July 31st! Grab that old guitar and see if you can hit the chords to Cheap Trick’s ‘Surrender’.

For over forty years at least once a month other bands or musicians, some well known, most are not, (YET) will treat me with their version of how they’ve learned the song “Surrender” which is flattering, but 9 times outta 10, it sounds kinda funny to me, so I usually either try to correct their rendition or I’ll suggest, you wanna know how I play “Surrender”? It’s simple but….thanks it’s great that you know it and you’ve learned it, maybe not wrong but let’s try my simpler way of playing. So here we go. The intro starts in B flat but it’s a barre chord on the first fret. Don’t play the low E string or the high E string. So it starts on the 1st fret barre chord on the 5-4-3-2 strings (B flat-E flat-A flat-C) for two measures to (B flat-F- B flat-D) for two measures —- then repeat (B flat-E flat-A flat-C) for two measures to (B flat-F- B flat-D) for two measures Then 1st and 2nd Verses are in B (B- F sharp -E) x 2 (E-F sharp -B) x 2  Choruses are (B chord B bass ) – (B chord A flat bass) – (B chord F sharp bass) – (E chord) repeat. 3rd Verse modulates to the key of C that’s tomorrow.
